Jurors: Past CEPA Directors & Curators Robert Hirsch & Gary Nickard

Robert Hirsch is an artist and author of numerous books, including Seizing the Light: A Social History of Photography; Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age; and Exploring Color Photography: From Film to Pixels.  He is a contributing writer for Afterimage, Fotophile, and The Photo Review, among others.  His ongoing project, World in a Jar, has traveled to over a dozen venues around the world since opening at Big Orbit Gallery and being purchased by the Burchfield Penney Art Center.  A former Executive Director and Chief Curator of CEPA Gallery, Hirsch now operates Light Research.

Gary Nickard is a Canadian born artist whose professional experience includes stints as Executive Director/Curator for CEPA Gallery, Associate Curator for Alternative Museum, Director for Burden Gallery, and Director of Programs and Curator for Artists Space.  He has lectured widely across the United States and continues to be a widely published critical essayist.  Nickard has exhibited his work at various galleries including the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Big Orbit Gallery, the Alternative Museum, Fine Arts Gallery, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, and CEPA Gallery.  His work is part of numerous collections including the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the Castellani Art Museum, Franklin Furnace Archive, Light Work and the Poetry and Rare Books Collection at the State University of New York at Buffalo.  Nickard is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Photography at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

This year CEPA will continue its tradition of awarding 2 EXHIBITION AWARDS. EXHIBITION AWARDS recognize those artists who demonstrate an elevated level of artistic maturity and skill in their work. The winners will receive a solo exhibit of their work in the 2011/12 exhibition year.
