Hark Hogan
Hot, Fresh and Just for You!, 2001
Mark Hogans installation critiques the homogenization of touristic experience via the destruction of local foodways by fast-food purveyors like McDonalds, et. al., and explores the effects of fast-food franchising as yet another means through which the expectations of global encounter are reconfigured yet remain essentially the same. By utilizing the tools of tourism, and promoting an "idyllic, childlike" and of course "tourist-friendly" image, McDonalds has spread around the world. "Exotic" native cuisines and the challenge of cultural engagement associated with that encounter, are replaced by blandly Americanized fare and the comfort of the familiar. Why, Hogan wonders, would anyone travel?
