Frank Miller
Souvenirs, 2001
Presented in triptych format, Frank Millers photographs of Niagara Falls investigate the longing expressed through simple and now universal touristic gestures. The 20-panel series, created for presentation through CEPAs Metro Bus Show project, combine time-lapse images of tourists, the sights of the Falls that draw them, and what they have left behind with close-up images of the posts that line the bridge to Goat Island, in the middle of the Niagara river. The posts Miller shoots are covered with graffiti, often about love. By juxtaposing images, Millers triptychs speak to the deeper needs of the touristic enterprise to capture and retain experience, to transform the fleeting into permanence, and to transcend times dissolution of memory.
