Contact Narratives: An/Other Sacrifice, 2001
Jolene Rickards installation, Contact Narratives: An/Other Sacrifice, circulates around water as a natural force with significance on social, cultural and economic registers. The project investigates Niagara Falls, particularly, as a point of contact and conflict between the regions Native and Euro-Anglo communities. Through documentary as well as popular images of historical and contemporary origin, the project presents a neo-colonial contact narrative to explore circumstances of continued economic and cultural subjugation of Indigenous peoples.
