Allan Sekula

Dead Letter Office, 1997
Allan Sekula’s 1995 exhibition and book, Fish Story, looked at the maritime world as the "forgotten space" of late modernity. Since then, he has produced a number of extended projects having to do with the imaginary landscapes (and seascapes) of global capitalism: Dead Letter Office (1997), Deep Six (1998), Gettyland (1998), Freeway to China (1998/1999) and Dear Bill Gates (1999). Working through documentary photography, Sekula is interested in the "touristic transformation of industrial working-class port cities" and "the involuntary return of the repressed insurrectionary history of these cities, despite their subjection to patterns of global tourism." The presentation of Dead Letter Office at CEPA Gallery marks the American premier of the project.
