Artist Run: CEPA at Thirty
Featuring the work of eleven past and present CEPA Gallery directors

July 9 - August 24, 2005

Artist Run: CEPA Gallery at Thirty, celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Arts (CEPA Gallery).  CEPA has established itself as a national leader in supporting and showcasing new work by important emerging artists, while also serving as a research and educational center. This exhibition, originally mounted at Light Work in Syracuse, New York, has been expanded to include more work by each of the exhibiting artists and pays homage to CEPA’s important contributions as made possible by the leadership of its directors.

Every director at CEPA has been a working artist. Beginning with founding director Robert Muffoletto in 1973 to the current director Lawrence Brose, each artist has had to balance the demands of leading a national arts organization and making time for the creation of their own artwork. The exhibition features art by all eleven former and current directors. The accompanying exhibition catalogue, produced as an edition of Contact Sheet by Light Work, includes artwork from the exhibition, interviews with the directors, and a detailed timeline.  It is available for $10.

The exhibit includes work by Robert Muffoletto, Pierce Kamke, Kevin Noble, Ken Pelka, Tom Damrauer, Kathy High, Biff Henrich, Gary Nickard, Gail Nicholson, Robert Hirsch, and Lawrence Brose.  CEPA at Thirty will include the world premiere of a new installation entitled Manifest Destiny & the American West by Robert Hirsch and the Buffalo premiere of CAGE: A Filmic CIRCUS ON Metaphors on Vision, a 5 channel video installation with sound by Lawrence Brose.

Directors Print Portfolio:  Each of the 11 exhibiting artists has chosen an image that will be available for sale individually or in a boxed portfolio.  Proceeds from sales will benefit future CEPA programming.

This exhibition will run at CEPA Gallery from July 9 to August 24.  It ran at Light Work from March 21 to May 10. This exhibition and catalogue have been generously supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and a grant from M&T Bank.
