Science and technology have been credited with solving many of the questions that have puzzled humankind, yet essential ingredients to our well-being have gone unaddressed. The Chambers of Enchantment: Recovery & Loss exhibition (Sept 20 - Dec 1, 1996) seeks to evoke or recover what science and technology took away: the sense of wonder, ritual, loss and placement within the world. Chamber artists tackle a variety of social and historical issues from violence against women to the killing fields of Cambodia.

CEPA commissioned 11 artists to create individual "chambers" which investigate spiritual and/or social identity concerns, and interpretations of family/cultural history. Several of the installations invite audience participation by encouraging viewers to physically incorporate a component of their lives. Viewers leave their mark on the installations, changing them by adding their own images, artifacts or arrangements.
