Matt Lange: A Succession of Fragments: the Archeology of Separation

Matt LangeMatt Lange is last year's Emerging Exhibition Award winner. Lange's work investigates the metaphysical implications of a digitally minded, mass-media driven, production/consumption based society by exploring the geographical settings in which it operates. The process for creating these images begins with a meandering through the spaces that constitute the urban environment, studying the impact of the area on those who traverse it. Then concentrating on the peripheral or in-between spaces, where travelers or inhabitants are always in transit, the goal becomes to disassemble and reassemble the meaning of the area. Making light of our cultural understanding of photography as conveyor of an unaltered reality, the images are eventually reconstituted as archaeological "evidence," reflecting the alienating experience inherent in moving through and living in a contemporary urban realm.
