Many Moons : photographs by Alice O'Malley

June 27 - August 22, 2009

Alice O'Malley was born in Buffalo, and has lived and worked in New York City since 1990. O'Malley will exhibit Many Moons, a continuation of her exhibition Community of Elsewheres, a body of work that she has been building over the past several years and which continues to evolve.

The artist provided a statement that describes Community of Elsewheres:

"Over the last seven years, Alice O'Malley has collaborated with scores of downtown New York artists to create a photographic archive of and for those who inhabit the peripheries a document of the affiliations these friends and neighbors have shared for over a decade in the Lower East Side. Set in the last empty rooms of a neighborhood reeling from takeover, O'Malley's studio portraits provide an intimate look at people for whom art and the avant-garde are integral parts of urban life."

When not working by day as a legal secretary in New York, O'Malley has amassed a body of work that includes well over 80 subjects, appearing in classic portraits taken in private homes in downtown New York. Her subjects are part of a "disappearing culture" of artists and models; some are well known in the art world (Antony of Antony and the Johnsons); others are reclusive.

Community of Elsewheres first appeared in Buffalo in Spring 2008 at Nina Freudenheim Gallery. CEPA is pleased to welcome O'Malley back to Buffalo for Many Moons, highlighting new work from the project.
