Ben Yu

For Ben Yu, the icon of a French Baroque-style chair serves as a mask for the French tourist travelling in Taiwan. Photographically, by maintaining certain compositional elements such as frontal lighting and an exaggerated ratio between the subject and background, Yu is able to replicate the snapshot aesthetic of the tourist. The chair mimics a "glance", presenting the limits of understanding and recognition of French culture by the Taiwanese people; and more importantly, the importing and exporting of culture.
