Imaging Niagara, 2001
In large-scale public art projects and interactive media installations, John Craig Freeman documents sites of cultural significance, which for political, social, economic or environmental reasons are under duress, at risk of destruction, or undergo irrevocable change. Since 1994, his innovative Imaging Place project has deployed interdisciplinary collaborative teams to assess issues of history as well as living culture at specific sites. Imaging Niagara, a continuation of Imaging Place, involves intensive site research and field capture of documentary photographs and video footage, and culminates in an interactive virtual-reality based installation that allows viewers to navigate between global satellite perspectives and ground level views. |
John Craig Freemans Imaging Niagara, a CEPA Gallery commission created under the auspices of CEPAs ArtWorks! residency program, is presented in conjunction with a forthcoming public art project funded by the GUNK Foundation. Courtesy of the artist.
